Who are we exactly?

Every place has the ‘standard’ landmarks and ‘must-see’ sites. So do we. But the ones you’ll come across, like the hundreds of galleries, museums, lighthouses, and historic sites, are actually living, breathing works of art that tell many a tale about our colourful culture and heritage and help explain how the people of Newfoundland and Labrador came to be.

Where culture sponges hang out
If there was ever a portal into our past, it would be The Rooms – our newest gallery – that unites the Provincial Museum, Art Gallery, and Archives under one roof. And if you didn’t soak up enough culture there, we’ve got 3 provincial museums, over 150 community museums, and hundreds of art galleries waiting around every corner.

Fog beacons (lighthouses to you)
Go to the wildest and most magnificent lookouts and you’ll find lighthouses. Like the ones at Cape Race, Fort Amherst, and Cape Spear – all built in the early nineteenth century as beacons for brave fishermen and mariners – that still operate today and are a testament to our challenging life by the sea.

Timewarp territory
If you’re the curious type, you might find one of our 10 National Historical Sites and 9 Provincial Historical Sites the perfect place to catch a glimpse of life many, many years ago. Learn about domestic life, the mercantile system, political issues, and even the times of the Beothuck people.
